Sharing your snack: unusual observation of a chick–chick feeding occurrence in colonial king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus)

چکیده

Abstract King penguins ( Aptenodytes patagonicus ) are colonial seabirds presenting an extraordinary breeding cycle. Parents take over 14 months to raise a single chick independence, upon which fledglings depart at sea for more than year. Juveniles often return the colony within three austral summers following departure, and before age of first reproduction (around 5–6 years old), possibly acquire essential skills involved in breeding. Little nothing is known on acquisition parental behaviour. Here, we report anecdotal, yet highly unusual, observation chick–chick feeding behaviour this species. The unusual that two non-sibling chicks, not independent, hatched different times (early late) same season were observed, older younger one. Whereas alloparental occur species, reported event. This raises question whether early social environment plays role parenting

Diving energetics in king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus).

Dive duration in wild king penguins and the energetic cost of swimming in a 30m long swim channel were determined at Ile de la Possession, Crozet Archipelago, using external data loggers and respirometry, respectively. Calibrated electronic data loggers equipped with a pressure sensor were used to determine dive durations: 95% of dives were less than 6 min long and 66% of dives were less than 4...

Orientation in a crowded environment: can King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) chicks find their creches after a displacement?

For seabird species, the presence of conspecifics in a crowded breeding colony can obstruct locally available orientation cues. Thus, navigation to specific locations can present a challenging problem. We investigated short-range orientation in King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) chicks that live in a large and densely populated colony. The two main objectives were to determine whether chick...

Localisation of an acoustic signal in a noisy environment: the display call of the king penguin Aptenodytes patagonicus.

King penguin chicks identify their parents by an acoustic signal, the display call. This call consists of a succession of similar syllables. Each syllable has two harmonic series, strongly modulated in frequency and amplitude, with added beats of varying amplitude generated by a two-voice system. Previous work showed that only one syllable of the call is needed for the chick to identify the cal...

Assessing a relationship between bone microstructure and growth rate: a fluorescent labelling study in the king penguin chick (Aptenodytes patagonicus).

Microstructure-function relationships remain poorly understood in primary bone tissues. The relationship between bone growth rate and bone tissue type, although documented in some species by previous works, remains somewhat unclear and controversial. We assessed this relationship in a species with extreme adaptations, the king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus). These birds have a peculiar growt...
